Congressional Medals of Honor Opposed to War

"I believe if we had, and would, keep our dirty, bloody, dollar-crooked fingers out of the business of these nations so full of depressed, exploited people, they will arrive at a solution of their own. That they design and want. That they fight and work for... and not the American style, which they don't want. Not one crammed down their throats by the Americans."
-USMC General David Monroe Shoup 1904 – 1983
(This statement ties back to an assessment made by Shoup that "in every case... every senior officer that I knew... said we should never send ground forces into Southeast Asia.") & supporter of VVAW

"To lack intelligence is to be in the ring blindfolded."

Major General Smedley Darlington Butler

"WAR is a racket. It always has been."

"My mental faculties remained in suspended animation while I obeyed the orders of the higher-ups. This is typical with everyone in the military.
"

"There are only two things we should fight for. One is the defense of our homes and the other is the Bill of Rights."

War is a racket. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives.

War is just a racket... I believe in adequate defense at the coastline and nothing else.

General William Tecumseh Sherman
(Feb. 8, 1820 – February 14, 1891)

"I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation. War is hell."

In our Country... one class of men makes war and leaves another to fight it out.

There is many a boy here today who looks on war as all glory, but, boys, it is all hell.

I think I understand what military fame is; to be killed on the field of battle and have your name misspelled in the newspapers.

Regarding the Racial Academic Achievement Gap

This open letter was written about 7 months ago as a response to another open letter claiming that the African American and Latino achievement gap could be related to Marijuana Use. I am re-posting it today because I want your help in expanding and developing the list of "Institutional Racism" that is feature in the middle of this letter. It is a simple tool for opening a friend or family members eyes to the depths of the oppression inflicted to create the ghettos of America.

The achievement gap very closely follows economic class status, and its relationship to higher education opportunities.
It is further exacerbated by socialized racism that has been legally implemented in all of our lives.

Our Contemporary Racism depends more on the propensity for privileged folk (mostly white people) to assume that economically oppressed, mostly ethnic people exist to suffer. As their suffering is collectively taken for granted; the question of why these communities would suffer the ghettos, and epidemic and endemic levels of unemployment, violence, crime, and lower academic achievement is never really asked. Hidden just beyond the neglected question of why, is a horror show of very contemporary legal and social oppression.

The Mechanism of our Societal Racism is in our ability to be okay with the idea that Black and Latino Folk were made to suffer, to accept it as static part of modern life, and not be immediately compelled to understand what happened? and what we can do to help our fellow human brothers and sisters?

Here is an incomplete list of the Forms Oppression and Systematic Racism experienced by people living today within the last 88 years,

  • Racial Profiling: an ongoing and very contemporary struggle.
  • If you’re only 2 years old, you were alive when lynching wasn't yet a Hate Crime. Lynching became a hate crime in 2009 via the Federal Hate Crimes Legislation aka the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which expands the Federal Government’s ability to investigate and prosecute hate crimes if the local/ state government isn't, and expands its protection beyond cases where the victim is involved in a federally protected activities such as going to school or voting, it was just passed in 2009, one year ago. Yes!! before 2009 a racially motivated murder wasn't a hate crime unless the victim was voting or going to school!!!!
    • If you're 3 years old, then you've been around for America's most recent lynchings, and White guys are still getting away with Lynching black folk: Brandon McClelland, executed 2008
  • If you're at least 21 years old and lived in a minority neighborhood, your parents wouldn't have been able to get a loan to buy their house due to Red Lining (1934 on through the 1990's), the practice of denying, or increasing the cost of, services such as banking, insurance, access to jobs, access to health care, even supermarkets to residents in certain, often racially determined areas.
  • At least 37 years old and you were around for Negro Removal aka Urban Renewal & Redevelopment. These were policies that allowed developers to get minority communities declared as slums, which would then be Taken through the power of Eminent Domain, and redeveloped for a profit. Urban Renewal was in full swing from the 1940's till 1974 with the adoption of the community block grant model, which switched to the model from community replacement to neighborhood Renewal.
    • West Berkeley's Very Own Redevelopment Agency is just closing its doors now. The plan was to clear out the poor and "colored" residential neighborhoods, for commercial redevelopment.
  • At least 39 years old and you would have been alive when the last Lawful Racial Segregation was ended. Segregation was law from 1870 through 1970.
  • At least 40 years old: You may have heard about COINTELPRO, an FBI Counter Intelligence Program that targeted Martin Luther King, Black Panthers, American Indian Movement, NAACP, and many other Civil Rights Agencies and Leaders from California to Puerto Rico
    • "Many of the techniques used would be intolerable in a democratic society even if all of the targets had been involved in violent activity, but COINTELPRO went far beyond that...the Bureau conducted a sophisticated vigilante operation aimed squarely at preventing the exercise of First Amendment rights of speech and association" --Report of The Church Committee
  • At least 40 years old, and you might have witnessed the closure in 1971 of Merritt College, the only Berkeley or Oakland Community College located in a black neighborhood, which was later reopened far away from everything except for a few that are wealthy enough that they don't need a community college.
  • At least 44 years old: you would have been around for Miscegenation Laws (1691-1967), in California through 1948, just 62 years ago. My mixed buddy's Trevor's parents got death threats for making a "mud baby" when his Czech mom birthed a child with his black dad in Oakland, just 28 years ago.
  • At least 46 years old, you would have seen the destruction of African American communities at the hands of the Interstate Highway System, 1956 -- approx 1965. Highways were often built directly through African American Communities, even socially vibrant communities like Black Bottom, Detroit could get labeled as a slum and be cleared away. West Oakland is a classic example where an African American community is surrounded on all sides by freeway.
  • At least 47 years old, you would have been alive when residential racial discrimination was still legal, it was finally forbidden by the 1964 Civil Rights Act in the purchase and sale of homes.
  • At least 66 years old, and you would have been around for the development of most of our society's most dangerous ghettos: the old housing from the WW2 War Ship Building (1940-1945) shipyards in Richmond, West Oakland, Bay View/Hunters Point, even Marin City, where Tupak Shakur went to finish High School. After the war effort, the federal, state, and local governments saw no value in securing a future economy for the African Americans who fled the south to go find work at the shipyards. The last real investment in many of these communities was the war effort 75 years ago.
  • At least 88 years old, and you would have witnessed ETHNIC CLEANSING via the TULSA RACE RIOTS through firebombing from national guard airplanes and wholesale destruction by armed white mobs of 35 blocks of black neighborhood, including Black Wall St. Not an Isolated incident, the Ethnic Cleansing in Tulsa inspired a few years of massacres across the states including the Rosewood Massacre in Florida.
  • And I'm not even getting in to events that happened beyond the life times of people living today, such as The Black Codes, U.S. Chattel Slavery, or the Imperial Colonization of Africa, And the Americas

Furthermore, to assume that because there is a Black President, that the problem of racism is over, is to forget that communities have always been divided against each other to enforce oppression. Hence the Field Slave and the House Slave. The existence of a successful black upper middle class does in no way mean that oppression and its amplifier, racism, is over. There are still to this day black folk that use the word "nigger" to describe "low/no class" blacks. Neither are Black Cops, D.A.'s and Judges (Upper and Middle class) any less vulnerable to prejudice against so called "low class" blacks, or their hot rodd'n "hood rich" counterparts. Racism is not over, but we're finally getting to an important apex where it's not the laws of our nation that are directly inflicting the harm, But their social and economic legacy.

At
this time in history, we have ended the majority of Laws by which our governments directly endorsed and applied racial oppression. Also, our Federal Government has begun to complete the work of criminalizing "non-state" agents and actions of oppression. We can now begin to earnestly alleviate the Economic and Social damage that was legally inflicted. Thirty, Forty Years From Now, in the balance of empowerment and oppression, we will still be in the Red. We will still be working to lift our fellow man and woman out of the oppression created by our culture. We have work to do.

Work like funding Primary, Secondary and Higher Education; Providing Youth with Summer Jobs; Providing Real Access to Tutoring for all students.
  • Simple stuff really, like making sure there are enough resources to make sure we don't have fifth graders that can't read!!!
  • Maybe the federal and various other complicit local governments could volunteer to pay damages in the form of college scholarships to our many Oppressed Citizens.
  • What we definitely don't need is to pretend that the real problem is that African Americans collectively have a Marijuana problem.

Sincerely, Asa Dodsworth

These are friends of mine, they are people I care about

This is a lil background and synopsis,

tristan and gabby are good people, and friends,
they are in Palestine now protesting the occupation.

Tristan is one of the few people I know, and can count them all on one hand,
that

a. are engaged as community builders and or activists. Many other people i know are doing work/play lifestyle and that is fun and dandy, but lacks the real life challenges and deeper rewards.

b. that regularly find compassionate solutions in other peoples controversy's. Most suckas out there are glad to fight, as long as they are fighting the "Bad Guys"

Gabby and Tristan met during the berkeley treesit, They have been sweet on each other ever since. Gabby as an activist is passionate, seasoned, and generally cool under fire. Her voice when focused has both a depth and command. She's got presence.

Here is picture of them, they're sweet. and i care about them both.

Take a good look at Tristan's face, its not gonna look like that in this video below.

In the video Gabby is standing in the center of the scattered group trying to attend to Tristan.
The shot was fired from far away after the protest had wrapped up. Israel uses high velocity tear gas canisters. Very different from the ones your police department uses. Your police department uses non lethal projectiles to launch their non lethal tear gas. Israel uses lethal projectiles to deploy their non lethal tear gas. Kinda doesn't make sense right, unless your trying to brutalize people and act like its not really your fault.

Oh yeah, and this video is shocking and horrible, and bloody.

Your browser is not able to display this multimedia content.

The doctors have cut out parts of his brain, the high velocity tear gas can punched bone into his brain. He wont see out of one of his eyes any more, and will have lots of rehabilitation to get any where close to what he was before. And he may still die, and he may be seriously brain damaged. Here is the article.

Killing them softly, these birds, my chicken friends..

I'm leaning toward the Stick and Poke method,
ya hit em in the head with a stick,
then cut the neck into a bowl,
then bleed em out, & make amends.

Stick and Poke, this vid shows the whole pluck and gut too.

The Chopping Block, the two nails are important to hold the head steady.

Break the Neck, this method seems pretty straight forward, but not to kind.

Bleeding the Neck, these cats mean business, plucking the neck alive.

Climate Change Moving Quick ad Heavy, & a Cool Tool to make real actionable assessments

climate change moving faster and more irreversible then previously expected. the oceans are absorbing CO2 and heat that will be released for the next thousand years, change must happen in next decade, or two.
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=99888903

Cool Tool For personal Accurate Assessments: and it is a wiki so you can improve its assessments for areas that have not been previously assessed. The city of Berkeley cold contract with Wattz On, to have a Berkeley page and forum that would aggregate the information of all the residents that use the site and to share ideas, especially local businesses that have smaller carbon footprints.  Local businesses coul load their stats on to the site for accurate, cites assesments, and berkeley citizens could then select choose to shop at these businesses and have them as part of their personal wattz on assesment.

Ethnic Cleansing in America

To talk about American history and race relations without using the word Ethnic Cleansing is either ignorant or dishonest. Though this word is easily applied to foreign tragedies, it is not ever used to describe these very same acts and attrocity's when committed in our own us history.
I added the Tulsa Race Riots, The Rosewood Massacre, and the Cherokee and Choctaw Trails of Tears to the Ethnic Cleansing Page on Wikipedia. These were wiki pages already existing, and listed on other wikipages on "Mass Racial Violence in the US", and on "The Trails of Tears"

There are many more important US events to add to this list, and I would love help building that resource. I think it would be specifically valuable to create a list of US incidents of Ethnic Cleansing on the Wikipedia, And to expand this discovery to include a Wiki page on systematic oppression that would recognize all the incidents of institution oppression under the policies "Urban Renewal".

I'm gonna share something awsome with you,

because I shared with you such an awesome thing, cool videos is what you owe me.

Science 10yrs ago, used to say that it was thermo-dynamically impossible for bumble bees to fly. Bumble Bees were simply too heavy.
Bumble bees live in a sorority colonies with a dominant laying mum,
They have a thick and heavy coat of insulation that allows them to brave the cold, and begin their pollinating work earlier in the spring. Bumble Bees are very important pollinators. Honey bees come out weeks behind them when the weather is warmer, and therefore aren't good for certain early season fruits, like some apples that blossom long before they show their leaves.

And then the sciencists,
they discovered the vortex power of the bumble bee wing stroke.
Fly's and bees and the rest, paddle through the air, like you or I might paddle along the water, if we were being sneaky.

When you are sneaking around in a Canoe, you don't pull your paddle out of the water,
cause they would drip water, and your quarry would hear you. To keep it sneaky, during the back stroke, ie to return the paddle to the beginning of a new power stroke, you turn the paddle to cut the water when you draw it forward, then turn it out for to push the water during the power stroke. You'll see little vortex's come off the paddle stroke into the water wake. With a real solid stroke you can get five to seven little swimming vortii. Vortex Power enhances the force of the bumble Bee wing stroke, an as air is a "liquid", the bee's cut the wing angle to slice through the air on the back stroke. Its pretty cool.

Check the video out again, it takes magic to see it happen, without camera's.
Which is why you owe me.

Berkeley has the Same Population Density As Berlin

Berkeley is the 35th densest City in the United States, according to Wikipedia Demographic Chart of US cities, this list did not however did not have Berkeley on it, which I edited in after checking the 2000 Census Bureau Data(it seems the census bureau changes their links, so you may have to navigate the pages). So I would look for other significant data. Also the Wikipedia Berkeley page seemed to have been vandalized, to represent a population density of about half of what it truly is, Which I corrected. According to Wikipedia Berlin just equals our Berkeley Density.

The Census Bureau site is easy enough to search, but they provide the raw data per city, and I cant find any charts that list the densest cities in the US. According the Census Bureau, Berkeley' urban density is about 5 times as big as Alameda County's 1,956.3, And almost twice the density of San Jose 5118sq mi. All density data herein will be marked in pop per sq mi. Oakland's density is only 72% of Berkeley's.

Some Data Sets Suck hard??? On the world City Mayors Site Berkeley would Rank as 65th in the world List of cities if it were simply inserted above Berlin, which has a slightly smaller population density. But the world list of cities is rife with inaccuracies. If San Francisco was placed according to the US Census Data, it would rank as the 6th densest City in the world. And New York would Rank as the second Densest City in the world. On this curious chart Berkeley would have a far greater population density then Oakland, San Jose, Sydney, Toronto, Vancouver, and New York which all rate in the 100's. Berkeley's Density is twice as great as Chicago and Melborne which rate in the 120's.

As for Data Sets that Suck, we can check out the main argument for the Measure G climate action Plan. You can find it on Wikipedia under urban density. What the Timothy B. presents is a widely disputed 1980's study by Newman and Kenworthy’s, which plots only 32 cities world wide. Wikipedia sites such a great argument against this that I will include it,
"Others counter that raising densities results in more expensive real estate, greater road congestion and more air pollution. At a broader level though, there is evidence to indicate a strong correlation between the total energy consumption of a city and its overall urban density, i.e. the lower the density, the more energy consumed.
However, there is an even stronger negative correlation between car use and fuel price, i.e. the higher the price of fuel, the lower the car use."

The great wiki source continues with a second map in which the same data is replotted with sq mi area per person. What you get is regional clusters that show how different cultures build different communities and their consume different amount of auto fuel

So the real question for me is where did we did we find these developers tools posing as climate action planners?? I would prefer a Berkeley with less expensive real estate, better air quality, and less congestion.

And where else do we get real accurate data sets for comparing populations.
Please respond in the comment section.

About Frank Abagnale Jr.

If you have seen the movie catch me if you can read the first google hit you find on the mans real name, it will probably be the true TV story that I found.  And the true TV story is better then the movie, not only are the escapes are grittier, bolder and more numerous, and the hustle with twice as much bustle, but there is less moral to the story. Franks story is the real life experience of a kid with a fair amount of opportunity that runs into everyday domestic trouble his parents get divorced. He starts off sloppy with thievery, moves on up to milking his dads gas card for cash, by faking sales with the help of gas station owners. Gets a taste for having enough cash to drive a nice car and treating the ladies.  The story builds gradually with more and more complex hustles.  He's a con artist, what steps him apart from the rest of the crooks, is his intelligence and his knack for impersonation. And he build it up big, credentials and everything he fakes a being a Pan Am Pilot, a Doctor, a Lawyer, a Teacher, he brilliantly spins the hustles farther, and farther out. And he gets away with them all of them, except the wanted posters, an is picked up in Montreal by airport police. And the escapes, crawls out of custody through the toilet of an airplane bathroom, onto a night time runway.  His hustle cant be stopped, more money at every turn. He even gets busted and cons the jail guards into thinking hes an undercover cop and they let him out of jail. He evades arrest on sheer personality on a dim, surrounded by armed cops in his hotel room, he walks out through the middle of them impersonating an FBI who beat them to the catch.  And in the end he still just wants to settle down and have a real life. But he wont get it cause the wanted posters are still out there and its an ex girlfriend that discovers he's a wanted man and turns him in for the prize.  And he does time in Sweden, France and America. He gets out six years later, without any help from the FBI. Worn out he tries to live real life, but cant keep a job as an ex felon. Keeps getting fired when the record pulls up his felonies.  With out anything but the crappiest work, he knows he can do better, and is worth more, he volunteers time with the FBI, lecturing officers on bank check fraud.  Pretty soon he gets real jobs for banks exposing the fraud, and creates a real million dollar career out of it. What gets me is event the true TV story wants to pretend he is reformed. He didn't reform, he just got a real opportunity to be a successful member of society. And that all any one needs to keep them away from crime, is something to loose, a real opportunity to succeed legitimately. That's what keeps kids away from crime. Real high paying work.

And we can create that. Solar electric, Solar Thermal, and Energy Efficiency improvements like Insulation, are all homeowner retrofits, that have proven investment grade economics behind them.  If we can leverage the credit that cities carry, to improve the quality of our residential and business property, by investing in their money saving solar electric, solar thermal, and insulation improvements we can create incredible amounts of real good paying working jobs for our children, neighbors, and larger communities.  And best of all Solar thermal, energy efficient windows, and newspaper fluff insulation are all products that can be produced locally.  You cant beat this job creating, environment saving, investment opportunity.  And we can give everyone a real job.

Re: your heart

When I was pubescent I started to discovered the loose structure of logic..
The fact that I could "logically" paint myself into corners, from which I couldn't act unless I broke the rules of my logic.
I read some interesting books, "Sexpol" by Wilhem Reich, he debunks his contemporary Freud and monogamy as an institution.  Reich makes a compelling argument for classic virginal marriage as the institution that suppresses sexual attraction and drives it out of respectable public sphere and into the seedy world of prostitution, where the sexual behaviors are over concentrated on a few public servants, and disease transmission is facilitated.
I found these theories compelling and was curious, so I tried open-relations*.

I suppressed jealousy, as it was universally recognized as bad, mythically bad!
Suppression didn't work for me, It twisted me up, as I pretended not to feel jealous, the reality of the jealous grew unchecked,,

So I realised that jealousy was a real feeling to respect, to listen to, to know myself with.  This way it would not torment me.  I could recognize it and gracefully/intentionally resolve my problems.

I latter would discover that anger too, was an important indicator of how I felt, and that shouldn't be suppressed either.  Suppression of anger was like trying to contain a geyser. It just builds greater and greater till it overcomes the forces suppressing it, and explodes.

It was the persistent goading of a jealous friend, with whom we shared a lover, that helped me discover the value of recognizing and intentionally/gracefully releasing my anger.  When I suppressed my anger; I seethed inside and started to plot for the first time in my life, I boiled inside and though I could carry the burning caustic brew through the bumps and trips of everyday life, it would rage and boil over when I was roadblocked with real problems.

I know recognized the tendency of ungrounded logic to misguide the body. I no longer tie myself to ideas that do not resonate with my heart. I use my heart, my emotions as the indicator, the compass with which to explore the shear kaleidoscopic potential of logic. If you listen to your heart to guide your dreaming logical, the solutions you find will be real. No more painting of oneself into corners.

I do not believe emotions are illogical/irrational. I believe they are the product of a complex, and true calculation, of ones conscious and subconscious experiences. And they produce a dependable true read of: true, false, offense, affection, love, fear, deception. I heed their warnings, and eat their fruits. And when I don't understand them, I ask myself why i feel that way, Sooner or later I unravel the puzzle, I will start to understand another facet of myself.

Love,
asa

*Eventually, I personally, realised the depth of connection lovers find in committed relationship is amazing, and the theory of open sex relationships palled in comparison.

More about you:

I was supposed to fill in a box with text about myself.
In it I put, the most important lesson, I have had to date.
Its the one that gives me more perspective and less enemies.

We, as people, see the world as we want it to be.
We rarely see it as it is.
If we want to be effective agents of change,
to make the world as we want it to be.
We must first, be able to perceive the world around us, as it really is.

Rarely does this clarity of vision happen simply from desire, or loose intention.
Perspective is defined by experience, Most lives are lived within a specific defined social pathway.
We see intersect others on different pathways and through social prejudgement stay safely in our bubble.
Remember no one is evil, and when you find one you judge, try to understand what is human and alive and in them.
Once you find that humanity in them, you can begin to understand them, and maybe even raise there awareness.

I was by fate, placed in the shoes of the ones I had judged enemy. I had to ask myself how did I get here, was I wrong?
I discovered that many of the judgements I had: Judgements of who the enemies were, of what is wrong, These Judgements were taken at faith value, they were the product of peer pressure and social conditioning. Because these were values not associated with the dominant conventional culture, they were more often defined against conventional culture, I had never applied my protective critical analytical tools on them. In lefty culture there is allot of time spent defining the enemy. To be precise, the word enemy is never really used, that would be stooping to their level.

Be careful who you hate, and define negatively. They might just be natural human beings you don't understand. The more enemies you define, the less friend you have. The less friends you have the less mutually beneficial solutions you will find.

The social justice perspective I identified with growing up with, identified the person I would become as an enemy.
One day I discovered I was that enemy, and I was forced to reconcile two worlds. I was the dissident and the landlord.
I didn't really reconcile so much, as learned what was human in that "other", that enemy.
There was allot of reason and real human experience that was happening in the enemy camp.
The solutions are simple when you identify an enemy: You act against that enemy.
When that enemy becomes a human being deserving human respect, the "solutions" become more complex to find.
But when you find them, because they understand the truths of the problem they will be real solutions.

I don't actually think the person I was and the person I have become are substantially different.
I think, socially, I had learned to identify them as different. Having experienced both roles I can see experiences/stories from both sides.
To visually identify depth you need two different perspectives. Two eyeballs. To see the world, more as it is, you need diverse experiences.

I am very skeptical when enemies are being generally defined. I do still have "enemies", but they are specifically described by their actions.

I perceive my observation, analysis and judgement to by more accurate then most perspectives I have met.
And in many ways I feel genius. Conceptually.
But mostly I am a fool: regularly Mis-communicating myself, alienating, and feeling alienated from, many of the people I know and work with.
I end most days alone, with a perspective different from everyone else.

History Syllabus as we would write it.

Books and the parts of history they tell,
we define the historical experience by investigating, discussing and sharing.

Web 2.0 defines for me the point at which groups initiate, create, present, contributes, hosts and publishes the works of knowledge they see fit. Each person that sees room for innovation and improvement invites a community to create and define an that niche.
its our turn to write it

Rattus rattus

R. rattus is the scientific name for the black rat. I find humor in that. The rats in my home are probably R. norvegicus, the brown rat, a great swimmer above and below water but a lousy climber. There are allot of rats in my home these days, I think more now then ever before. I had been avoiding these thoughts, the inconvenient awareness of rats all around me, and therefore acknowledgement of the cleaning and social coordination necessary to starve them out. I would have continued on with my school prep, business planning, and home reclamation, but the fridgerator wouldn't work. This typically happens when it rains and the wires get wet and short out, the fridge is outside. Nothing happened when I hit the reset button on the GFCI outlet (ground fault circuit interrupt= electrocution interrupter) so I investigated the back of the fridgerator, it took a while to notice the colorful chips of plastic scattered about. The rats had been chewing the electric cords inside the fridgerator, Augh!! Bane of collective existence, testimony to why its not OK to leave your home a mess, the rats had struck again. It had been years since the rats had caused damage, I had almost forgotten about them. They would chew up the phone cords in the walls. Endless hassle repairing what they would soon destroy. The reason perhaps they had not cut a phone cord in a while was that I had not reinstalled the living room phone line cut some 10+ months ago. They were probably still chewing up those phone lines but as I wasn't repairing them I didn't notice.
They've destroyed the fridgerator, its gone too far. I pace around. Must do something, it's gone too far. The only other people home are two roommates who have been dating for a while and just recently started to argue. aggh better leave them to their intense discussion. I start to clean under the fridge and around it. The fridge sits on the edge of the back porch, under it a rat mulch has been growing, chewed up wrappers, nails sticks stones and lots of rat poo. I hose it out, I try to hose it out but the smell is deep within. It smells wet like a dog, and greasy pee, like a dirty ol' dog wet with rat piss. I cringe wondering how it got this far. Medieval Europe comes to mind, rats make me think of the medieval. How can people live like this, with the smell of rat pee.
Rats pee every where they go, like ants, they mark their trails. This allows a group intelligence. It marks a safe space for rats, Rat Haven. Its this smell that tells me how bad it is. When I think on rats, I think of all the futile attempts I've made at shooting with pellet guns, snapping with traps, maiming with glue. I have never poisoned them. A poisoned rat kills your or neighbors cat, even kills owls, this unacceptable. Even worse they die in your walls and reek and fester with flies, and reek for a very long time. I have never poisoned rats, but I have smelled them in others walls, it takes a long time for a festering carcass to dry out and stop smelling so much. Killing rats doesn't stop them, it just makes life a lil' better. It teaches them to be less bold, to dissa pear when they hear you comming.
The killing of rats is unpleasant, I cant keep it up. Today I killed two. Rats are too fast, you dont get a glory hunt, there is no honor, you shoot them when they trapped in a whole, when they think they're hidden. When their running, I shoot and always miss, ten shots in a row. Then when they think their hidden, in a whole in the wall or under a box of tea in a milk crate, they dont move. Then I have time to aim, and click the trigger, oops the saftey, click, oops the co2 cartidge, I run to get one, the rat is still there hiding, it young grey furry bum sticking out from under the tea boxes, I aim and shoot. It twiches, curling around in the crate, I aim and shoot again, this time in the head, it quivers for a while. These rats would have gotten away but the door was closed, and they couldn't get out. They kept scampering over to the door, trying to crawl up it then running back to the crates. Theres on more rat, I see him hiding on top of his dead sibling. I ran out of b-b's on the first one so I grab a kitchen knife, it takes a minute to pick one with a good point, and not the best carbon steel blade but a sharp stainless steel cheapo. Still hiding in the crate I stab and miss then stab again. It sinks threw the rat off center. I push the blade into a box in the crate and stand back, my mind spinning with imagery, I dont know what to do. The rat squeels in pain, it crawls up the blade, squeals and collapses, then tries to run again. Enough, to the knives again, this time a butchers knife and cutting board. I pull the knife out wwith the rat on it. It moves trying to escape, intestines falling out. I deftly hold the knife at an angle so he dosn't slip off, place it on the cutting board, and whack. It trembles spine crushed, probably already dead but it keeps shaking, I cut its head off. Silence. Bloody nasty silence, full of fresh images.
I don't really blame them for eating whats left out, I blame myself for leaving the house a wreck, or in this case, for putting up with people that leave the house a wreck. The only thing that stops them is eliminating their food source. The deep smell of pee says its already worse then that, it wafts out from a giant gaping cave, leading to an under world, it glows.
Rats live in colonies of up to 60, they'll forage for food and water more then a hundred yards away. They feed on shoots and leaves, sprouting plants, Ivy roots. They are resourceful
creatures, their is plentiful fresh water in the back yard creek. I will drive the food out, the endless grime and mess that feeds them, but that wont be enough. They have made a home here, Rat Haven, and will travel far to gather food. Rat Haven's probably a like a colony, maybe even a few. You can almost see it in the texture of the smell of the pee .
We will trap, starve, seal and hunt them out. Our friend hearing of our hardship, has shared a great wisdom with us, this very day, The bucket trap. You fill a bucket half to a third ful o water, enough to drown a rat. Then you lure them with peanut butter smeared around the inner rim. The bucket trap doesn't stop working, the squeal of drowning rats lures them in. Starve. Simple enough, it takes diligence: no food left out, no grain stored in soft containers, the bread crumbs swept away. Sealed the out. All rat holes dug under, packed with broken glass, nailed shut and screen over. We will establish predators to hunt them: gopher snakes and a hunting cat. I have a fishing license and with that I can catch 4 gopher snakes a year. Gopher are small, but the snake will slither into the nest and feed on the young. And the cat, we will raise on live mice, it important that they learn to kill young. Boa constrictor snakes cared for by naive keepers have been slain by rats, or so I've been told. If a snake was not raised on live rats, it wont recognize them as food, but a hungry rat.. the snake probably starved to death and the rat fed on its rotting carcass.
Rats arn't ogre slayers, They're ninjas climbing walls, stealing baby chicks and ducklings, they drag them to their nests. Monsters, fearsome, families, they send the males out to do most of the scavenging. Whenever I go on a rat trapping/killing spree the first few nights its the older and teenage males, the next few nights it young males and pre teen daughters, then hungry moms, sometimes pregnant, then the lost scared starving juvenilles. It feals horrible. They're tight knit ninja families sticking together, my friend pulled a nest apart and found them sprouting beans and seeds. Raw vegan ninjas. Its how pre-historic man softened grains and beans for eating, by sprouting, and probably how they discovered beer so early in human history. The rats followed civilization out of the orient, through Rome, westward europe 6th century, to england around 1700's, and everywhere western civilization could bring them. They may be as old as civilization.

Metacognition refers to thinking about cognition (memory, perception, calculation, association, etc.) itself or to think/reason about one's own thinking. The ability to consciously think about thinking is unique to sapient species and indeed is one of the definitions of sapience. ie Homo sapien sapien. Sapient is not to be confused with sentient, sentient means to feal, sapience means to know.

rats also demonstrate metacognition http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18108859/site/newsweek
